Jatin Pandit (who I admire very much as a music composer) and Aadesh Srivastava (something of a bully) seem to have blatant double standard when it comes to voice quality of a singer. Remember Arvind from Kangra? How roughly was he treated when he sang ‘Jiye To Jiye…’ from ‘Saajan’ (which in my book was very touching and of original voice) by Jatinji only on the pretext that his voice somehow or other matches Kishore Kumar and Kumar Sanu’s, despite singig tunefully and was given very low points. Aadeshji as usual made fuss about tonal quality and followed Jatinji. Now, putting this into context how would you react when you see the same people(Jatin & Aadesh) giving Harshit very high marks in the 11 August(‘Jo Haal Dil Ka…’) episode, despite imitating Kumar Sanu more conciously and obviously. He also copies Kishore Kumar conciously when he sings Kishoreji’s songs. I am not here to prove that Harshit is a bad singer but, if having fresh voice is one of the criteria then he shouldn’t get higher points especially from Jatinji and Aadeshji logically, as they have always been fastidious about independent voice. I think Harshit is a very good singer but a little overrated in this show by all the judges except Abhijeetji. I think Abhijeetji is fairer in assessing Arvind and Harshit on the same grounds. Coming back to Jatin Pandit and Aadesh Srivastava, my question is how can they be so whimsical and inconsistent in their judgement on such a big show? Other viewers of VoI also post your views on this if you like to.

I fully agree with Sumitr. A singer can be judged on may criteria and the organizers should make it very clear what people should look for. There are lot of copy artist available in the market who can exactly copy other singers

Lalit and Adesh should leave their vested interest behind and try to be a true judge. Till now, it appears that their comments are driven by something other than music.

Sumitr, You are right. I found Abhijeet and Alka being more impartial during judging than others. Jatin seems little partial towards Music composure team. But am sure Abhijeet has really worked hard with Priyani, Irfaan and Prantik. And they are improving in every episode. But Lalit and Adesh had the best singers Toshi, Mirande, Abhas, Harshit on their side who are performing in their own way. Harshit has very good play back voice (voice of Kishoreda, but agian in Bollywood lot of other singers have similar voice like Kishoreda or Rafi Saab) but he does not have the right kind of Music talent. I am not against Harshit, he has a voice that can be used in melodious songs but this show is looking for the best voice. So it should be a new voice with great music talent.
That I think, I am listening through voices of Toshi, Irfaan, Priyani, Mirande, Abhaas. Ashpreet also to some extent. Others are very good singers also but they are more regular singers. Their voices have nothing new. Anyways, they all are better singers than Saregampa singers. Only Raja and Aneek can come close to these singers. May be Amanat will also be in this team.
Let’s see how this AVOI is going. It seems this has best talents.

@ Ashish
I agree with you that almost all the singers in this show are better than the SRGMP except for Raja, Aneek and Amanat…
The big difference here is the focus on gayaki rather than Music Director’s ego.
But the one thing which I found irritating is the same thing which you have pointed out – the teams have been divided into composers guru and singers guru and the person who is supposed to be impartial Mr. Jatin is seems to be partial to the composers (Agni)…
And that’s going to raise a controversy in the future. The person who got elimiminated, Pranthika seemed to me to be a very good singer compared to the group average. Better than Abhilasha or Sumitra…
But I like the quality of singers in this show and knowledge which I get…such as how would Kharaj/Dhrupad sound and what effect it might have on the consciousness (Toshi’s Lagan Lagi)…which is not there in SRGMP.
I would also like to see a show which competes on classical singing and music…where Judges could be people like Pandit Jasraj, Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia and other guni’s and competitors would be graded on difficulty and technical ability. This would help a lot of people to appreciate classical traditions in India and raise general awareness in people. I also think there is a big market of people out there who are interested in something like this.

I don’t agree with the comment below. Singers & composers are not simply wasting there time to make them perfect. Maybe composers will get the good singers for their new projects but singer, hats off to them. When they are taking so much pain to helping young champs then they hai full authority to comment on there life, atleast till the end of this show. they are Gurus and after parents Guru’s will come.

I fully agree with the comments of abhijeet on Harshith, but why jatin pandit is trying to protect ‘agni’ team. Harshith had sung very similar to kumar sanu, no doubt. Its an request to Jatin Pandit that please be neutral judge.

Poor poor performances….by almost everyone..with one or other excuse…and judges are disgusting except Alka Yagnik…Aadesh, who himself is out of work, commenting on others….well no comparison to SAREGAMAPA’s Aneek, Poonam, Amaanat, and Raja….they are at much-much higher level…It was shame in front of a person like Jagjeet Singh..
By Anonymous on Aug 14, 2007 | Reply
Hmmmmm totally agreed with above comment.
But shan is very good as an anchor expect the show if flop.
I only watch show becuase of him
By Anonymous on Aug 14, 2007 | Reply
Actually that is true, except for Mauli and Sumedha, everybody else in Saregamapa is much much better than star voice of india contestants.
Junaid’s voice is husky and he cannot reach low notes but his high notes are very good and his overall singing is also very good but not as good as the remaining team.
Aneek brought tears in my eyes with the “Bulla ki jaana main kaun song” and also “Sandesay”.
Amaanat is yet another gem in the team.
And Musarrat showed his talent with the “Sawaray” song from bandit queen. He can actually retire from the contest, he needs no more contests, he has proven himself with just that song.
And Raja is undoubtedly a terrific singer.
Poonam really has the “Dard” in her voice and she has a lot of potential.
Well, I guess that’s it, have I forgotten to mention anybody else? So, there’s Aneek, Amanat, Mussarrat, Poonam and Raja. Well I don’t really know who is my favorite. In spite of watching them perform so many times, I still cannot decide who my favorite is. THAT’S what you call a true competition.

I think Lalit tries to act too smart. Whenever Abhijeet comments on any of Lalit’s team members, he totally refutes his comments and tries to deviate the topic. Every single time he tries to show that whatever Abhijeet is saying is crap. There is no need to take things personally here, if Abhijeet says Harshit has copied Sanu’s voice, everybody has heard it and seen it, he really HAS copied it. Then why try to act too smart and accuse Abhijeet of saying Sanu is a bad singer??? Whereas Abhijeet didnt say that at all. We all know it is so easy to immitate Sanu, in every galli nukkad u will see Sanu immitators of mimickri artists. Of course Abhijeet cannot openly say that. But why didnt Harshit sing the song in his own voice??? Isn’t that what the Pandit brothers advocate??? fuckin hypocrites!!!
By Anonymous on Aug 14, 2007 | Reply
I agree with the above comment, Lalit and Aadesh should stop intimidating Alka and Abhijeet with their immature attitude. Whenever the poor Prithvi judges try to comment on the Agni members, Lalit and Aadesh become very defensive. It doesn’t even matter if what the Prithvi judges r saying is true, before even they open their mouths, these fuckers are ready with a repartee. Every time they come back with a harsh personal comment to put the Prithvi judges down, whereas Abhijeet tries to be fair. He scolds his own members if they have sung badly, thats a true judge and mentor. Lalit and Aadesh act as if they have adopted their members and now they r their children, they try to cover up for all their mistakes and flaws like they were their babies. Show some professionalism guys and yeah did I mention Maturity???

You know , when I watch these shows the thing that strikes me, is that the judges should be first trained on what it means to be a good judge. The 2 idiots, Lalit and Aadesh are like kids, say anything about their singers and they go ballistic.I could not believe that Sumitra Iyer actually sang such crap.I know that the producers love controversy (increases TRPs), but this is no way to fool the public. Please rein in the judges and also can we see the last of nautanki artists like Sumitra and see good singing instead (if we wanted that we would see Indian Idol!!). And Dear Aadesh and Lalit, your bias is showing, stop drooling guys!
By Anonymous on Aug 14, 2007 | Reply
Seriously… Sumitra sang so badly and yet Lalit went on saying she is one of the top contestants and you should have seem the look on Sumitra’s face at that. She was like, “Hell yes”, her mannerisms and attitude show that she really thinks she is at the top, no humiity at all, her smile and everything is just fake and cold, whereas to be honest she sings like shit!!!
By Anonymous on Aug 15, 2007 | Reply
Sumitra has sung some songs really well in earlier episodes of svoi. Though I do agree she’s becoming more complacent by the day. All of the folks commenting on the ‘low’ level of singing in this program haven’t said anything about the good singers in it like Toshi, Irfan, Mirande, Prantika … Jagjit singh went to the extent of saying that Toshi sang Kailash Kher’s song better than the original, and that’s saying something! I heard Raja and Emon’s renditions of Tune kya kar daala and still think Toshi’s was the best. Have any of you critisizing the level of this program hears Toshi sing his first song (Piya re)?
This program has some great singers in it, no point in comparing them to the ones in other programs. It’s hard to not favor the program you have a personal liking for.

Hi All
We are in New Zealand and watch this SVOI every week. Even a few of our kiwi friends also watch SVOI. They call Jatin and Adesh biased towards there team especially Harshit. For ex. Sumitra- No doubt she is a good singer but the way she has performed in the last two doesnt speak of her greatness but still Lalit went on to say she is the best as if he is trying to credit himself for preparing her. It is really bizarre that our kiwi gora friends pointed this out. They loved Alka and Abhijeet when Abhijeet openly criticized Harshit for copying Kumar Shanu and telling Sumitra that she is not at her best today. Still Lalit and Adesh took offence.
i think they are just trying to prove that only a Music Director can train and make anybody a good singer. They have shown a litle respect for the two great singers Alks and Abhijeet and behave as if they exist because of Music Director.
The way SVOI is progressing, i dont see it as as success.
For ex. how can you choose 1 VOI,when you have male and female singers in line of final 12. Male composition and style is altogether different from female. If you are given a chance to choose between Kishore Da and Lata Ji, whom will you choose.
SO I THINK THEY SHOULD GO FOR ATLEAST 1 MALE AND 1 FEMALE VOI.
By Geeta, USA on Aug 15, 2007 | Reply
Great Though Kamal
I think they should seriously consider choosing 2 voices instead of one.
Cant kick out any one of Kishore Da and Lata ji for sure.
Also message to Lalit and Adesh – BEHAVE PROFESSIONALLY AND NOT LIKE A POLITICIAN.These chaps are next generation singers, dont show them wrong path by hiding there flaws.
Alka and Abhi – You are doing great.
Kamal excellant thought….of 2 VOI’s

I totally agree with Abhijeet that some contestants are involving in extracurriculer activities at the cost of VOI contest, he is damn true, it should not be tolerated at any cost. We are in a hunt of voice of India for such a great country,Abhijeet, Alka are fair judges, I would stand with Ashpreet, Toshi, and another girl from Mumbai for VOI`s rest of them are not worth, espacially sumitra has no class at all, she suits in a bar singing.

I have always been moved by certain pieces of music and knew there was something which I needed to understand to have a more gestalt experience of life. Thanks to SRGMP and ASVOI, my interest has been rekindled and I have been able to learn quite a bit by googling up some good sites. My autodidactic knowledge is fairly nascent/miniscule and in this largely aural/experiental body of knowledge at some point I know I will have to take recourse to some guru for tumso ma jyotirgamaye…
I made a mistake in post at the top…the Kharaj is not because Toshi sings in Dhrupad style(I did learn a lot about Dhrupad and it was such an eye opener for me) but Kharaj in Khayal which as a friend pointed out has much more latitude for creative expression. Thanks a Bunch. Can’t express my gratitude at these tidbits of knowledge. Helps me to appreciate and enjoy things a bit more.
I do wish a lot of posts did not degenerate into negativity but discussed and focused more on the technical and finer points of singing. It would be positive and help everyone.

I am a deep music lover since 1965.
Amul Star Voice of India is the best among all musical talent hunt shows. And ofcourse “AABHAS” is the best among all the contestants.
Rafi saheb’s “Hai Duniya usiki” and Kishor Daa’s “Aake Seedhi Lagi Dil pe” were ultimate.

I keep listening to both SRGMP and ASVOI. If you take the current episode and the previous one, it’s very clear that the singers from ASVOI are way ahead of SRGMP. Plus, this show is much more fun and easy compared to SRGMP.
I think SRGMP creative team has hijacked/manipulated the show and made it into a soap opera. Its like a Saas Bahu serial now…Every week their is a fiasco or the other, this week it almost looks like the start of a India/Pak war!!
The board(http://www.saregamapashow.com/) has also become extremely polluted…This seems to much more staid and sober, Thank God!! Hope Gajendra never succumbs to the temptation to convert this into an Issue an Episode show.

From Sri Lanka,we agree Abhijeet and Alka Y are true judges especially Abhijeet, AVOI should have 2 winners a female and a male.To really judge the singers, stop these latest songs and start singing the classicals and you’ll find the true singers
By Anonymous on Aug 19, 2007 | Reply
i was stunned when toshi and irfan were declared to be in the chakravat.
it is incredible. toshi’s songs are the most difficult, followed by irfan and priyani but it seems that the voters are going for the safer voices and they tend to vote for someone if they like the song, and not for the originality and quality of the singing.
Perhaps, toshi should now be given songs that are of a different style — jis se kaleja fat jaaye. abhi tak hilaya hai, ab rula de.

so many on this blog have commented on the lack of originality in some singers yet the votes are going to them?
what explains this?

Hi…I am Aurangzeb Abbasi from Pakistan. I have been watching SVOI since its beginning and so far have enjoyed it a lot caz I am a great music lover. So far Harshit has been my favourite and to me he will be the Voice of India.
One thing which I would like to notify is that so far the singers have sung songs of Kishore, Aasha, Lata, Kumar Sanu, Sonu Nigam and many of the present age singers but the biggest ICON of not only the Indian Music but the whole sub continent Muhammad Rafi has been completely ignored in this competition. This is really surprising for me. You must dedicate at least one program to Muhammad Rafi in which the male singers of SVOI must sing his best songs especially Harshit must be given one of his most brilliant songs like “O duniya ke rakhwale sun dard bhare mere nale” or whatever song that suits him.
I hope my request will be carried out in a next program.
Thanks
