Ishmit and Harshit on reaching Final of Star Voice of India
Amul Star Voice of India is in its final stages. Ishmeet from Punjab and Harshit from Lucknow will battle it out in the grand finale. Indya reporter spoke to Ishmeet and Harshit to find out how he is preparing for the finals and more about the show.
Ishmit’s Interview
On making it to the finals
“I never thought I will reach the finals but I always wanted to give my best, rest is all luck. It is very encouraging for any participant to constantly get highest votes from the audience. I want them to continue supporting me in the finals as well and hopefully the result will be positive.”
Preparing for the finals
“I want to perform well in the finals so that I am able to maintain a soft corner in audience’s mind. Winning and losing the show is not important. Reaching the finals is the biggest achievement. I am not tense about the finals because I am very confident of myself. My mentors are also egging me on. I know the real struggle will start after the finals.
Performing in front of Lataji
“When I will sing in front of Lataji, it will be the memorable moment of the show for me. We will meet her and take her blessings. Both of us are expectedly a little bit nervous. She is like Goddess Saraswati. We will make sure that she likes our performance.”
About the show and his experiences
“I give credit to my judges as they selected me first. Then the audience too has played a big role in my success. This show has changed my whole life. People have started recognizing me and my parents are also feeling proud of me. It has given me an identity. Whenever I go out my fans come to me and ask – you are Ishmeet from VOI right?”
“Sometimes judges used to give me harsh comments and also told me that I do not deserve to be here but then they only selected me. At one point of time I used to feel bad but then I ignored it so that my performance does not be affected. Shaan bhaiya used to cheer me on a lot though.”
Future plans
“I have already got some singing offers. Composer Uttam Singh has offered me a song in his next. Then I have also got offers from Punjabi music directors and will also be singing for some devotional movies.”
Harshit’s Interview
“It feels great to have reached here as I have really worked very hard for the last 8 months. It is like a dream come true for both me and Ishmeet. Whoever wins the competition, for me both of us are winners. There were some excellent singers with us, so reaching the finals is something very big.”
Preparations
“I am not nervous at all. My only aim is to perform well and impress everyone. There are many expectations from me, so obviously that pressure is there. There are only a few days to go for the finals so I have doubled my riyaz timing. I want to leave my impact on the audience’s mind. My mentors are also supporting me a lot.”
Singing in front of Lata Mangeshkar
“This is biggest tension I guess that we will be giving our last performance in front of Lataji as she is going to judge us in the finals. We respect her a lot and she is like Goddess Saraswati for us. It’s our privilege that she is coming for the finals. Meeting her is like a victory in itself and I am really very excited about it. It will definitely create history as this will be the first time that Lataji is coming in any reality show.”
I want to thank…
“First of all I would like to give credit for my success to mummy and papa because they supported and encouraged me a lot. When I was called for the audition I was supposed to appear for my physiotherapy semester exams. The date of the exam and the audition was clashing and I was totally confused. But my papa said ‘we will see whatever happens. It is important to take a risk in life. You go for the audition’. So I took that huge risk and thankfully got selected. God has been very kind to me.”
Future plans
“The struggle in life will continue whether I win or lose the show. I have got an opportunity to sing for Mukesh Bhatt in his film. Apart from that many people have approached to me. Jatinji and Lalitji have promised me a few songs in their movies. However, I will be able to concentrate on that only after this final. In this field you have to struggle a lot and that is a fact but this show has given me an identity. The future depends on my hardwork and I will try to prove myself with whatever offers I have received. Simultaneously, I will be continuing with my physiotherapy studies.”

Back after the weekend.I don’t think that i will be able to go through all the posts of previous 2days.
The episode in Ludhiana was amazing!!! It was so lively and unbiased. Was real fun..
Banaras episode was again a bit biased as expected.
And Ishmeet’s confidence seemed to be at its peak this week.Harshit performed well but somehow I liked Ishmeet’s performance more.
By arun on Nov 18, 2007 | Reply
Finally, Lalit showed some maturity (for a second though) and said that we all support Ishmeet. I think we all bloggers should take cue from this and start anew with discussion on purely music and performances of Harhist n Ishmit. Time to forget past eliminations or how biased judges or people are. Let’s focus on singing abilities of these two singers.
Jane kya hoga rama re…both performed so nice. I was shocked when Ishmeet sang this line: Banda yeh dheet hai ye kuch nahi janta. He delivered this punch which I was always looking for in his voice. That’s the major difference between him and Harshit. Harshit sounds very nice partially due to his ability to imitate any singer. He sings the song exactly as it was sung hence scores. But his voice is strong and sang Mast Kalandar very nice. On the other hand, Ishmeet is quite original and melodious. He needs to mix this sweetness with some strong/hard tones to deliver the punch. I thought he lacked alot of energy in the qawwali (sigh…Toshi).
Not sure whether people, in general, would look for a perfect copy or originality. I am sure, Lataji would love originality but she would also look for some variety/classical notes.

In the last song: you’re my love, I thought it was two Shaans singing. Seriously, lol. Did anyone feel similar?
By arun on Nov 18, 2007 | Reply
Everyone,
I know lot of people don’t support either Ishmeet or Harshit as VOI, but what if you were asked to select one of them purely based on his singing ability! From here on till the final, how if all the respected bloggers post their comments, after watching these last two episodes, who they think should be the winner out of these two. Although I am new to writing here, I still feel it would be a very good activity.
I invite all bloggers to post who they think should win out of these two and on what basis. Please, no finger pointing the bloggers on their choices and no communal remarks. Enough of it. (Jatin, here is a chance to redeem urself with some mature comments. )
In my last post, I dissected the last episode and stated my views. But, If I have to select a better singer out of these two, I daresay, it should be Harshit.
Let’s show some spirit guys unlike the judges on the show.

True,
All publicity gimmicks man. And so many religious naras in yesterday’s show. But its understandable, majority are Hindu watchers and they would like it for sure thus raising the viewership.

I am appalled to see these messages (in this particular thread) issued in my name.
I hope bloggers would note this fake Rishi and real Kamal (present at the same time) during this gaali galoj. Issuing in my name and condemning in immediately for six continuous messages- indicates who he is.
It is not difficult to judge who is trying to malign me.
Moreover, I cant see my name associated with these kind messages. These messages suit to Kamal and people of his ilk.

Since the last message to you (issued in my name) might have caused you some hurt feelings, It is my duty to tell you that despite my differences with you, I can never do these things. You can see when messages were being issued in my name- then who was sitting at the same time to condemn me.

arun,
i have mentioned innumerable times,i neither support harshit nor ishmeet.
harshit is definitely a better singer in terms of range, powerful voice, good throw etc.once he corrects his lisp, with good training and under good guidance, he might score.might being the operative word.
ishmeet, i still maintain is an average singer.there are hundreds of voices like his…and if hes gonna break into the bollywood music industry, its going to b very tough for him.
regarding whos gonna b crowned voi, its nothing to do with talent and more of a money making exercise.
cheers.

Can’t agree more.
Nice Justification.
By arun on Nov 19, 2007 | Reply
I remember the words Lataji said, when they showed the episode where all the singers went to see her.
Her advice to the contestants was not to copy any of the established voices. She has always said it’s relatively easy to sing popular numbers, much harder to sing original numbers. Although, I think Harshit is a better singer between the two, but this might stand against him. But, Ishmeet doesnt have that quality of singing that could win Lata mangeshkar. So, she might end up not deciding a winner at all or just give equal marks to both. And so, it would again depend on the votes.
By arun on Nov 19, 2007 | Reply
A meeting with Goddess Saraswati: They have rehearsed with India’s most famous singer from Sonu Nigam to Ghazal Maestro Jagjit Singh but, one memory that will never fade for the Top 5 contestants of ‘Amul Star Voice of India’ is their rendezvous with the goddess of singing, Lata Mangeshkar.
Ishmeet was so emotional when he met Lata as he expressed that he values meeting Lataji more than winning VOI, a statement to which Harshit could not agree more. Sumitra was quite ecstatic as well and she could not believe it as it was a dream come true for the young talent and Irrfan claimed that blessings from the legend is all that matter to him.
The Top 5 not only got a chance to meet Lataji but, they also performed for the singing legend. Abhilasha failed to impress the queen with her singing in fact, Lataji even asked her if she had practiced before crooning for her.
It was Harshit in the end, who was applauded by Lataji and Irrfan managed to win her praises as well. The Top 5 also, presented a huge flower bouquet to Lataji as it happens to be her birthday on September 28th; they also sang the famous song, “Baar baar din yeh aye.”

i do agree abt what you have written abt supporting singers.yes even i do not support any singer.but when one particula singer is praised and another is critisised,it is presumed to be supporting one particular singer. that is the problem here.ppl should understand abt genuine comments abt music and music only.let us all talk abt music .please, all my dear good bloggers.

i am amazed at the naivete of the ppl on the blog, regarding votes.its just a money making exercise, using the sentiments of the ppl as a crutch.the sooner ppl realise it, it will b better.the whole show is manipulated in every way, judges, editing[mainly],participants, everything.
will one of the 12 participants come out and let us know what actually transpired??no way..if they want to make singing their career.its a very very unforgiving world, and even the smallest slight is blown out of proportion.singers, music directors, everyone has an massive ego,and we ahve seen careers ruined over the yrs.[agreed, it applies to every field..this is more obvious, being in the public view].
its best, this topic is not discussed on a public blog.

i really want to know ppls opinion…do muslim singers render soulful songs better[yes, lot of other singers from diff religion have also done so]and that limits their capability to singing a variety of songs??
By arun on Nov 19, 2007 | Reply
Kalyani,
Most bloggers here now agree with this money making business of voting. But, Alas, Indian public! The aam janta is still naive, and goonda elements still rule various parts of the country. Probably, the reason why Ishmeet is still in there is bcuz the number of votes he generates. He is the money making machines for the channel.
By kristo on Nov 19, 2007 | Reply
yes.even the ultimate winner is already finalised.gajender is already into his next project.he is not bothered abt the future of the winner bemiasl 12 or whatever.that is left with music directors.
it is survival of the fittest either by influence or by quality.the method of music has also changed over the years.it has become something like buying chappals from the paement.there will be new new styles, but will never b durable.that is whY oldies like shankar jaikishan,LP,RD BURMAN ,NAUSHAD,SALIL CHAWDARY
ETC,are all remembered.
presently, majority of music directors want to make fast buck.majority of singers have no quality.majority of listeners want only veriety.so they get what they ask for.one thing is very clear. quality will definitely last for ever.
cheers

Kalyani,
Mohammed Rafi, one of the greatest singers this country has produced, was a complete singer. He was good in all genres. Nusrat FAK, was the greatest sufi singer seen in this part of the world. If a muslim is a sufi singer then he is a person trained to sing in that kind of genre. You can’t expect him to sing differently. So, its unfair to blame a sufi singer to be unable to sing in different genres.
Your question probably arises from lack of muslim mainstream playback singers. There could be several reasons behind this. One of the major reasons could be that their religion is not very supportive of music n singing in public.
If we see in VOI, Toshi was very strong in sufi kind of singing but not that strong in different genres. Still, I consider him the best singer in VOI. Irfan, overall was a complete singer. I would rate him above Harshit n Ishmeet.

no kalyani there is none to my knoeledge.after M RAFFI,the quality is not seen amoung them.there r no soulful singers.
A R RAHMAN IS AN EXCEPTION. But he is basically a music director.that is b cause he has changed his name.HIS ORIGINAL NAME WAS DILIP.

My roommate is a pakistani and I have come to know many talented singers in Pakistan. They have a big culture of very nice rock bands and individual albums.
In India, bollywood movies shadow everything. Any good singer straight away marches to playback singing and gets stuck in the rot. The singers here aren’t soulful and don’t have originality. Originality as in real talent of singing their own songs. I hope you understand what I mean here.

I sincerely believe that a good, talented singer should have his own work attached to his name apart from the work he does as playback singing. Playback in movies is good, but real talent is when you create something of your own and people like it. India doesn’t have this kind of culture. I admire singers like Mohit Chauhan (Silk route), Lucky Ali, KK (Pal), Kailash Kher, Palash Sen (Euphoria), Bilal Maqsood (Strings), Atif Aslam (Jal), Mekal Hassan, etc who have individual work to boast of. These guys do playback singing but at the same time keep producing their own albums.

This scenario took place on the day of grand finale, when show was about to start and all of a sudden Gajji jumps on the stage and after that. . .
It goes like this.
Gajji: Hmmmm…. Kitane participants the?
Shaan: s.ss sss .. sardar.. 12 the.
Gajji: hmmm.. 12 participants? …. SOOWAR KE BACHCHO.. (Addressing to judges) woh 12 the aur tum 5. phir bhi bahir ho gayeye . Kya samajh kur sub ko bahir nikala, Gajji bahot khus hoga sabasi dega kyoon? DHIKKAR HAI …
Jatin Lalit: immediately says, Gajji, saraswati maa ki kasam, may to neutral judge ho, mujhay zaleel nahin karo.
Gajji: Arre O Shaan… kitna inaam rakkhe hai Amul waly VOI par?
Shaan: sardar.. .. Poore 20 lakh and 1 gari ..
Gajji: Sunan.. poore 20 lakh aur 1 gari.. aur yeh inaam isliye hai ke yaha se pachas pachas kos door jub bhi koyee acha singer acha gana gata hay, to uss kay parents kahtay hai beta/beti acha mut gaa.. nahi to Gajji sunlega. Aur yeh 5 haraam jaade..ye Gajinder singh kaa naam poora mitti me milaay diye.. aur itnay achay singers final 2 may lay aye… sajaa milegi.. baraabar milegi..( Abhijeet se revolver leta hai aur usse poochhta hai) kitni goli hai iske andar?
Abhijeet: (woh chauk jaata hai, or speechless)
Gajji (shouting) : KITNI GOLI HAI?
Abhijeet: (shivering) Chhe sardaar (six)
Gajji: (khud se) chhe (6)? (Shouts) 6 GOLI.. 6 GOLI HAI ISKE ANADAR.. 6 goli aur judge 5… bahot naa insaafi hai yeh…( 1 goli hawa me uda deta hai) ab theek hai. haa ab theek hai.. ab iske 5 khaano (holes) me goli hai 1 khali.. ab ham issko ghumaege….(…) ab kaha goli hai kaha nahi? .. hamko nahi pata .. hamko kuchh nahi pataa. is revolver me 5 jindagi (life) 1 maut (death) band hai… dekhe kisse kya milta hai? Moves his revolver towards Jatin Pandit….
Jatin Pandit: Gajji , saraswati maa ki kasam, may jhoot boloon to mujhay roti na millay, actually shaan bhi brabar kaa partner hay, 6 gooliaan poori karo nahin to tumhay saraswat maa ka ashrap lagay gaa.
Shaan: Aray kia baat hay jatin ji aap ki, harami kaam aap karein aur goli khayin hum. Wah wah issi khusi may TALIYAANN (clapping)
Gajji points his revolver towards Abhijeet
Abhijeet : Agar Toshi or Irfan kay eliminate honay pur mujhay goli Khani pari to may chup nahin rahun gaa, iss leye mujhay chup rahney do and don’t disturb me or else I’ll ask Ishmeet to call his brothers and get Gajji killed. (Gaji again gets confused!)
Gajji points his revolver towards Alka Yagnik
Alka Yagnik: Gajji, yah pata nahin janta kee waja say humay goli kion Khan pur rahi hay. Meri Abhilasha yahan hoti to may usko agay kur deti aur goli usía lug jati.
Gajji points his revolver towards Adesh Shrivastav
Adesh Shrivastav: (Shouts) GAJJI, ARAY MERA MAN (Heart) GOLI KHANAY KO NAHIN KUR RAHA TO JABARDASTI HAY KIA. Gajji, yah jo game tum nay khali hay naa…. Saraswati maya ki saugand. … Goli tujhay bhi Khan ho gi. JAY GANGA MAYA KI. (Gajji is scared now!)
Gajji points his revolver towards Lalit Pandit
Lalit Pandit: Gajji, mera khayal hay kay aaj goli mujhay nahin lagay gi, yeh meri sirf prediction hay, agay tumhari marzi. Lekin yah anap shanap goliaan maar kur tum bach nahin jayoo gay. Janta tumhay nahin choray gee.
Now Gajji is very confused, because no body dared to speak against Gabbar Singh (in Sholay) and here everyone retaliated to Gajinder Singh! (they have Singh in common).
Gajji: points his revolver towards Shaan and says .. .teraa kya hoga Shaan?
Shaan: ..s..sardar… maine aapkaa namak khaayaa hai sardaar..
Gajji: ab.. goli kha! (revolver Shaan par chalata hai use goli nahi lagati) kamaal ho gaya… Pehla bachh gaye ( ab Gajji ka hansane chaalu karataa hai) yeh Shaan h.. ha ha .. ko .. goli nahi lagi( ab Gajji jor se hans rahaa hai) (5 judges bhi hasnaa chaalu karate hai…. aur achanak 5 goliyon ki aawaaj aati hai aur woh 5 judge mar jaate hai… ekdam sannataa chha jaata hai.. thodi der baad Gajji says) jiss nay acha gaya.. samazo eliminate ho gayaa.
Now Harshit & Ishmeet were present at this scene and they were so scared and ran away from the stage. Lataji was very happy because he didn’t want to choose VOI from final 2 and Amul company went bankrupt for sponsoring VOI.
No evil doing meant here, just a funny side of VOI. If anybody’s hurt, my apologies in advance.
